Desktop Change

'Unsuitable' machines will be removed from the production environment.  These are:

  • Apple Power G5 & G4's.
  • All PC's older than 5 years.
  • All Pentium 4's & Pentium D's.

After this change, you can expect to have the following desktops:

  • Design environment: Apple Dual Core Intel-based processor machines with screens large enough to show 2 x A4 pages side by side.
  • Everyone else: Use existing machines if 'suitable', or new PC's (as per IT's 2013 spec).
Process Change
  • All information for each mag issue will reside in WoodWing only -  (and not on your PC or local servers).
  • All 'objects' (images, articles and layouts) will be tagged with one of a set of possible 'statuses'.  These will indicate the progress of the object towards readiness for printing.
  • You will be able to communicate electronically with other users on the status of each/any 'object' (images, articles, layouts) by means of sticky notes and routing.
  • You will have a 'Woodwing Inbox' containing 'relevant' information.
  • Revisions of  'objects' (images, articles, layouts) will be automatically saved and will be easily accessed as and when needed.  You won't have to create various differently-named files for each version of an object anymore.
  • PDF's will be automatically created by the system by simply changing the Layout status' to "Layout to pdf".
  • If use is made of 'MediaPlanner' (the page planning tool), then adverts may be 'dragged & dropped' into the page plan.  Thereafter, they will automatically update the Layouts.  In addition, page numbers will be automated & updated as and when required.
  • The plastic job bag will become redundant.
  • An electronic overview of the entire publication will be available.  It will show the magazine development in real-time and will show (using colour-coding), the status of all objects and the overall issue.
  • Software can be setup so that writers, editors and designers can work simultaneously on the same material/article/story, even where teams are geographically separated.
